She trained in the United States and then returned to England in 1970 where she co-founded the first centre for Humanistic Psychology in Europe, Quaesitor. She was trained as a Gestalt and Bio-Energetics Psychotherapist and as a Group Therapist; her teachers being amongst the pioneers of the early days of Humanistic Psychology.

Clare has traveled all over the world leading groups and trainings. In the seventies she lived in India in the Rajneesh Ashram and returned to England to establish a major commune in Suffolk and London, Medina, where more than 200 people lived and worked. Since leaving the Rajneesh movement in 1984 (see life changing moment) she has been in private psychotherapy practice and has continued to run groups around the world.

For six years she worked in the area of HIV and AIDS which she considers to be among the most profound and humbling experiences of her life, working with people who faced some of the greatest challenges that life can bring, often with immense courage and determination to live every moment until the very end. For a number of years she has taught psychotherapy to degree level as well as clinical supervision for graduate therapists.

Clare has an enormous respect for the lifelong journey of discovery and learning which each human being is part of and continues to live her own life with a joy for adventure and the fun of taking the next jump into the unknown.

A NEWSLETTER FROM THE RAIN FOREST

Read in German: Deutsche Übersetzung »

The ongoing deluge of rain seems to be endless, the only variable being in the degree of its intensity. It has been like this for most of the time since I arrived here in the Australian rain forest two weeks ago. And for most of the time I’ve been alone in this cottage.

This morning when I got up I looked out wondering if this will continue until I leave in two weeks time – and there was a strong feeling of resistance, wanting to escape, get away. And then I had a realisation and the words came “this is for me”. In that moment everything was totally different and I felt absolute joy for the gift of this time here, the torrential rain, another whole two weeks to enjoy the wonder of everything. Every precious moment as it unfolds……

As I look back at my life I can see with such clarity how each moment has actually been totally perfect – I don’t have a single regret. That feels so joyous. Immediately following that thought comes the next realisation and I laugh as it comes “how very silly complaint is”. That really does feel hilarious – the very notion of complaining when it’s all so totally for me. It’s just perfect as it is.

And of course there have been many moments which have felt very frightening, painful, some moments which have felt full of terror and anguish, remorse, of feeling abandonment, a lot of rage – it goes on and on – also the intense joy, the love, the fun, the moments of totality and wonder, each satori experience…. All part of this richness, this gratitude for everything life has given me.

And now it’s really raining hard as I sit peacefully alone in my cottage……

AND SO TO THE SATORI PROCESS

The experience I’ve described above reminds me of so many I’ve had – and seen many other people experience – in the Satori process – moments of rebellious resistance, wanting to be anywhere but here…… And then in a sudden magical instant everything is different, everything has changed – the projections and judgements have fallen away and we see with utter clarity, very simply, what IS.

As always I would like to encourage as many of you as possible to come to a Satori group in this coming year. I want to share with you the enormous gifts that this group brings – its intensity, its experiences of joy and of hilarity, of deep sharing with others and, above all, the astonishing moment of arriving, in an instant when everything is the same but utterly different – at the truth. Your truth, nothing to do with anything you have been told from the outside, a truth that rises up from deep inside you in that transformative millisecond of time when something clicks – and you know!

The Satori process is an ongoing journey. Each group is another experience, another journey of learning. It is never the same. A lot of people come wanting to re-capture what they have had in an earlier group and that doesn’t work (they may even give up, a bit like life really!). Your process continues into deeper places. It’s a journey of incredible learning, of profound breakthroughs. Above all it’s a microcosm of you – it’s your totally unique journey.

ALSO WEITER ZUM SATORI-PROZESS

There seems to me to be a very simple alchemy about giving and that is that whatever we give comes back to us – in abundance. Now I can’t know this for sure but there does seem to be a magical quality that manifests when we share with others, whether it’s a smile at a passer by, a small act of kindness or our joy and laughter – we feel a glow of joy. It’s also possible that when we feel or express resentment or negativity toward another the world around reflects that back to us and we feel depleted.

The story I tell in this video is one I love and tell in every Satori process. I tell it to encourage people in the group to share totally – not to hold anything back. The possibility is that this is the same in every moment of our lives, that when we give, however small the giving, we expand and a letting go happens. And when we withhold, in however minuscule a way, we contract, we become tighter and a little smaller.

Since returning to France earlier this month, after the last Satori group, I have been very much alone. Some friends who live close by, a man I spend time with who touches my heart, but, essentially always alone. Even when there is another with me. There is no-one I can relate to or share with from this utter aloneness. It sometimes feels very lonely and I also know that this is essential for me right now – in fact it’s perfect.

I mention all this because I can sense it is a place that many people are struggling with at this time. It’s actually an existential reality of life and one that most of us run away from because it feels like emptiness and we try to fill up this emptiness. So I’m sharing it to reach out to all of you who are consciously facing this aloneness, not to escape from it, because we can’t – simply to share with all of you who are facing the depth of this reality at this present time – as a fellow traveller.

Last week I wrote to the people who participated in the Satori group in Germany and much of what I said has a relevance to what I’m trying to describe because it’s just about being with what is. After the group a number of people wrote to me asking how to stay in the live energy of the Satori process. The following is a part of my reply, which I am including here as it has a relevance to us all:

Falling In Love With Yourself…

What that really means, in the way I’m seeing things, is making yourself the priority, your awareness, your waking up – the priority. We so often look to the outside, falling in love with another, money, approval, success in others eyes and we remain unfulfilled and wanting more. We stay trapped in wanting things to change, to be different. Living for a future time, a dream of when we will find happiness.

When we change our focus to our own process, our awakening, to whatever is happening in this moment we are falling in love with ourselves, caring for ourselves, noticing whatever IS right now. Very simply, whatever is happening in this moment, whatever the experience, nothing needing to be changed – only felt, seen, included – exactly as it IS.

This is precisely what we experience in a moment of realisation in the Satori process. Whatever the question it is so clear that the only thing that has ever been in the way of seeing the reality of what is has been our judgements, our wanting things to be different. Whether it’s about ourselves, another, life – in that moment we see with astonishing clarity how we have been viewing everything through a cloud of our own projections and judgements – and when we see everything so perfectly there AS IT IS we become free.

Some of you have written asking how to stay in touch with the experience of Satori, saying how difficult it is when returning to the everyday world you are living in. The fact is that trying to stay in touch with a past experience is just wanting things to be different. And that’s fine too! Also to be included “Wow – here I am in this moment wanting things to be different!” It’s hilarious when you really see it. And in that moment you are in love with yourself! Such a journey and such a miracle… Every moment and experience is always FOR you, nothing needing to be changed – another opportunity to be with yourself and whatever is happening right now – and it’s transforming.

The next Satori process is in England in October, come if you can and, if appropriate, tell the people you care about that it’s happening.

With love,
Clare.

P.S. Paul Lowe is an inspirational teacher and my lifelong friend. The recording “Being With Yourself, Just As You Are” felt so appropriate to include with this letter to you all.
